Will Hughes insists Watford will not allow themselves to get carried away after a 2-1 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur gave them a fourth straight Premier League win.

The win, which was secured thanks to goals from Troy Deeney and Craig Cathcart and saw Watford come from behind, leaves the Hornets sitting third in the table heading into the international break.

Such success looked to be well beyond the Hornets reach before the season got underway, but they have been good value for all of their wins so far.

Hughes says while Watford’s players are in understandably high spirits, they will not allow the start they have made to the season go to their heads.

“It is brilliant but we can’t get carried away too much,” Hughes told the club website. “You’ve got to enjoy it while you can because throughout the season we are going to suffer and it’s not going to be straight-forward every week.

“It’s four games in and we’ve seen last year that there’s a lot of quality teams in this league – it’s not going to be easy to carry on this run – so we’ve got to keep our feet on the ground.”

Sunday’s success was perhaps the Golden Boys’ most pleasing of the season as Watford showed huge girt to overcome a Spurs side with designs on winning the title.

The win continued a theme of profitable outings under Javi Gracia at the Vic, with the Hornets taking more points at home than any other top flight side since the Spaniard’s appointment in January.

Hughes feels the manner in which Watford came from behind to down Tottenham shows the quality they possess and says they are confident entertaining any side.

“I think at home we are a match for anyone,” he said. “We’ve shown that with our record since the gaffer’s been here.

“We’re not afraid – you’ve got to respect teams when they come here, especially the ‘big six’ – but at the same time you can’t be too wary because you’ve got to get about them and put pressure on. I think we did that.

“Against such a top side when you go 1-0 down, people could get their heads down and everyone expects them to go on and win the game, but the boys showed real character.

“As soon as we got that equaliser it gave everyone a lift and the real belief that not only could we draw the game, but that we could go on and win it.”

Watford’s home form has never been in doubt under Gracia and it was the key element in securing their top flight status last season. Away days have been a wholly different matter, however.

The Hornets scored just once on the road between the start of 2018 and the end of last season, but were able to down Burnley 3-1 in their first away game of this term.

Hughes is now keen to see the club improve on their showings when away from Vicarage Road in a bid to keep their good start going.

The midfielder said: “We’re a tough team to play against at Vicarage Road, and if we can improve that away form slightly I think we’re going to be a match for anyone.”
