A borough-wide ban on travellers could be brought in as the leader of a council confirmed bollards will be installed at a park.

Following pressure from neighbours in Borehamwood to protect parks from incursions, Cllr Morris Bright announced that £40,000 will be spent at Ripon Park “as soon as possible”, during Hertsmere Borough Council’s full council meeting last night.

Cllr Bright said the work will be funded by section 106 money which means there will be no expense to the taxpayer.

The £40,000 estimated cost is based on how much the council has spent protecting Park Avenue and King George Recreation Ground in Bushey- £17,000.

There was no mention of any other parks that may see measures which would make it more difficult for travellers to encroach onto land.

However, Cllr Bright said he is seeking a blanket ban and an injunction on travellers in Hertsmere but warns this will “take time and cost money”.

He spoke extensively on the issue during his leader’s report, closing the speech saying "enough is enough".

He says installing bollards and gates at Ripon Park provides a “short-term” solution. In recent weeks, Ripon Park has been heavily camped on; at one stage there were around 20 caravans there and most recently four caravans and a motorhome turned up before leaving on Wednesday.

On Monday, the council confirmed it has spent £41,000 on traveller incursions as well as court costs, which are around £500 a case, in 2018.

Councillors acknowledged the quick response from council officers to encampments on land.
