A young police officer who saved the life of someone who fell off a building has been chosen as student constable of the year at an awards ceremony.

PC Andrew Thomas, who is based in St Albans, was honoured at the chief constable’s annual awards.

PC Thomas was first a special constable for Hertfordshire Constabulary in Watford before joining the force in St Albans as a police officer in February 2017.

In his first year, he made more than 90 arrests and conducted more than 120 stop searches.

One day, PC Thomas provided life-saving first aid to someone who had fallen from a roof. He remained calm and professional despite being surrounded by 50 members of the public.

Hertfordshire Constabulary said PC Thomas is an “asset to the force” and always comes to work “with a smile on his face”.

PC Thomas was presented with his award by Chief Constable Charlie Hall and Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Robert Voss.
