A petition has been launched calling for a public enquiry into a development which sparked the most objections in a council’s history.

More than 500 people have signed the petition which focuses on the Crown Road ‘container home’ development in Borehamwood.

The planning committee at Hertsmere Borough Council passed the proposal in February, despite 435 objections being lodged by people in the borough and a large campaign to stop the development by nearby neighbour.

In all, 28 modular homes will be built which will provide housing for people living in temporary accommodations.

Despite being given the green light back earlier this year, work is still to get underway and £352,000 of extra cash was given to the project which already cost £2.2m.

Chairman of Elstree & Borehamwood Residents’ Association Andy Lewis says he has set up the petition to allow the issue to be discussed again between the council and neighbours.

According to Hertsmere Borough Council’s own petition scheme, 1,500 signatures will result in a debate by the full council while 750 signatures will mean a council officer will have to respond to the issue that has been raised.

Mr Lewis said: “People’s considerations were not taken into account when this decision was made. An in-depth report was done which highlighted factors as to why the development should not go ahead but these were ignored.”

Protesters raised concerns about the development being in the wrong place, describing it as “unsuitable”.

The council says it is aware of the petition and will be dealt with in line with procedures once it is submitted.
