Several swans have been found dead with some with their heads chopped off near a reservoir.

The RSPCA has been alerted to reports of dead swans at the Aldenham Reservoir in Aldenham Country Park, Elstree.

Some of the swans have been found decapitated while another had a part of its chest removed. Others showed no signs of injury.

The swans have been found over the past six weeks.

Although the RSPCA understand the birds could have been killed as a result of predation by other wildlife, Inspector Isitt is concerned about how many have been found dead in such a short amount of time.

Inspector Isitt said: “The RSPCA was contacted by a concerned caller regarding a number of swans found dead at the location over recent weeks.

“Given that around seven swans have been found dead, I am looking into this and would appeal to anyone who may have any information.

“One swan found also had part of its chest removed and two have been found without their heads. A further four swans have been found dead around the reservoir with no apparent injuries.

“Swans are beautiful animals and I would like to get to the bottom of why there has been dead birds found at this reservoir, which is in quite a secluded location.”

It is illegal to kill swans in the UK and anyone caught deliberately trying to injure or kill the bird can face up to six months in prison and a fine.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the RSPCA appeal line on 0300 123 8018 and leave a message for Inspector Isitt.
