More mental health counsellors should work within schools to help students cope with exam stress and other pressures, a youth group has demanded.

The St Albans and Harpenden Youth Council made the plea promoting the interests of their generation at a public meeting on November 13.

Eight members met with councillors from St Albans City and District Council’s two scrutiny committees on improving counselling within schools.

One member, Niamh McGrath, said “every pupil” could benefit from such help and youth council members also agreed counselling within school meant pupils would not miss lessons.

Feelings of isolation during school holidays and support for pupils with learning disabilities was also discussed.

The council said Youth Health Champions help young people improve their mental health and make the right lifestyle choices.

Councillor Roma Mills, vice chairperson for the meeting, said: “I was struck by how passionate the Youth Council was about the need to provide better help for those with mental health problems or learning disabilities.

“Those are important, complex challenges and it is very encouraging to see our young people take them on.”
