The fight to save Jessel Green was first launched in 2016 when Epping Forest District Council published proposals for the site as part of its 11,400 home Local Plan.

Its intentions to build 154 homes on the treasured green space quickly became known and prompted a huge amount of anger within the community.

The campaign to save the green quickly mobilised, with an extensive awareness raising effort launched online and in person.

Representations were then written to the council by the shed load, all of them making different and often highly personal cases for why the field should be kept as it is.

Despite the best efforts of the campaigners, in December 2017 the council voted to approve the draft of the plan with the full 154 allocation on Jessel Green intact.

The campaigners were dealt a second blow in March when MP Dame Eleanor Laing spoke out to give the council's plans her blessings.

Hope that the wheels would come off the whole house building venture were scuppered in the summer when a High Court challenge by developers C.K. Properties to have the plan judged as unsound were thrown out by a judge.

Doom and gloom did not set in amongst the campaigners however, who made sure to enjoy the green as much as possible during a baking hot fun day.

While Jessel Green is still very much in jeopardy, come February its supporters have a chance to convince a government planning inspector why its inclusion in the Local Plan renders the whole document unsound.

If they can convincingly do that, the green could be around for some while yet.
