A speed hump at a "hazardous" crossroads described as a ‘notorious accident blackspot’ will be reviewed.

Last year, a bump was introduced at the junction of Stratford Road and Park Road in Watford, but Cllr Mark Hofman was critical of the work by Hertfordshire County Council.

He said the ‘shallow raised table’ was “too low” and has done nothing to stop drivers speeding over the junction.

Watford Observer:

This is the junction which has caused Cllr Hofman to campaign for better safety measures

The hump was created shortly after a 20mph zone was brought into the Nascot ward of the town but Cllr Hofman says he was “outraged” when he saw the finished work.

He said: “After six weeks of work and many thousands of pounds spent, the table was revealed to be only a few inches high and to be little or no deterrent to drivers who chose to ignore the speed limit.

“I was outraged when I saw it. This busy junction is an accident blackspot with a number of collisions and near misses in recent years reported to us. On one occasion, a substantial brick wall was flattened.”

Watford Observer:

Now rebuilt, this wall has been a victim of a crash which happened at the junction

Cllr Hofman has revealed a safety review is due to get underway which will look at raising the bump by several centimetres, as well provide an overall safer area for motorists and pedestrians.

He added: “This junction has proved hazardous for many residents. I have worked with highways engineers and our county councillor, Mark Watkin, to ensure the views and feedback I have received from the community are heard.

“When residents were consulted on the scheme, we were assured that the table would be effective. It clearly is not.

“It’s high time the county council returned and made this notorious accident blackspot safe.”
