A campaign group showed their love for nature by writing Valentine's cards to their favourite trees.

Save Our Square campaigners from Walthamstow are a group of protesters working to prevent a development in the town centre of Walthamstow and the subsequent loss of public open space.

Campaigners gathered by the avenue of lime trees on Saturday (February 16) to share their affection for trees in the borough by writing and attaching cards to the trees.

Chair of Save Our Square Nancy Taaffe said: "Valentine’s Day is universally known as the occasion for men and women to declare love for another. But this year Save Our Square campaigners decided it was time to show some love for our trees too.

"They gathered by the avenue of lime trees threatened with destruction, to ask shoppers to show support for the long-running campaign to stop private developers invading our town centre and cutting down 81 mature trees.

"They provided cards, so people could write their own Valentine message to our trees, or make their own card, that were then hung around the trees in a marvellous display.

"The stall was busy all the time. The range of comments expressed simply: 'Leave the trees alone', 'We love our trees' and 'You give us oxygen', to more colourful condemnations towards the council for allowing all this to happen. Some school students expressed their outrage too.

"After many participated in the huge demonstration involving school kids who were demanding world climate change the previous day, saving the trees in their own borough really struck a chord and lots signed up to become Tree Defenders."
