Bus passengers will benefit from greater video streaming after a company reached a deal to boost its Wi-Fi connection.

Carousel Buses, which runs the 103 service between Watford and High Wycombe, as well as numerous services through the Chilterns, has partnered up with RebelRoam.

RebelRoam helps deliver a better Wi-Fi service without increasing costs for higher data consumption.

It means passengers will be able to stream video content more easily during their journeys. Furthermore, it has enabled access to You Tube for passengers, which is commonly blocked by public transport Wi-Fi providers.

An increase in online video content has added a significant increase in pressure to transportation providers’ budgets. However, the collaboration has managed to reduce data consumption by 25 per cent and reduce costs for providing on-board Wi-Fi, while improving the customer experience.

The data consumption reduction is achieved by actively filtering out unnecessary background activities, automatic app updates and optimizing video streaming services. Less data over the wireless links also means less network congestion and a better user experience.

Phil Southall, Carousel Buses Managing Director said: “Passengers expect a high-quality Wi-Fi experience on our buses and coaches. By partnering with RebelRoam we have been able to deliver an even better Wi-Fi experience to passengers. The new system means passengers can now stream video content without congesting the network and increasing data consumption.”

Carousel Buses has become one of the first UK operators to use the new technology.
