A former Watford Observer reporter and music shop “legend” has died following a short illness.

Stanley Leard-Freeman, former proprietor of Queens Road Music Shop in Watford Town Centre, died on Saturday (February 23) aged 90.

Mr Freeman was a pillar of the Queens Road business community for over 60 years and well respected by his customers and fellow traders alike.

He closed the shop in June last year when he retired at 89.

Watford Observer:

Mr Freeman, “Stan” to his friends, was born in Stepney, East London, on August 6, 1928.

After the Second World War, he joined the Bucks Herald in Aylesbury before moving to Watford in 1950 where he became a lead reporter on the Watford Observer working under editor, Max Kingston, and sub-editor, W.E (Bill) Davies.

During that time, Mr Freeman covered many local and regional stories – most notably the famous Harrow and Wealdstone train crash of October 2, 1952.

He also became chairman of the National Union of Journalists, London and South East branch.

As a young reporter in the 50s

Speaking about his life, Mr Freeman said: “I was warmly welcomed to Watford in 1950 as a reporter for the Watford Observer; but in 1958 I diversified and opened my music shop.

“The shop itself became the scene of many a debate, game of chess, and even campaign headquarters for concerns close to my heart.

“Stories of ‘old Watford’ have been told and retold in my shop. It was an important haven for many people as a place to just come, chat and relax.

“Queens Road was my life. The people, some who are sadly no longer with us or have moved away, have been wonderful friends and very supportive.”

Mr Freeman received a tide of kind messages and tributes when his Queens Road Music Shop closed its doors for the final time.
