Watford Borough Council are set to offer one-to-one sessions to EU nationals after the success of a public event.

Council experts could soon be used to advise people from the EU who live and work in Watford about their rights surrounding Settled Status after Brexit.

Chris Benn, a specialist immigration lawyer for The New European Association, spoke to more than 40 EU citizens about the process they may have to follow depending on different outcomes to the proposed vote on the Government’s Brexit deal.

Watford has the largest community of EU nationals living in Hertfordshire. Around 7,000 EU nationals live in the borough; 7 per cent of the town’s population.

According to figures from Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership, EU nationals made up more than half of new National Insurance registrations in Watford between 2016/17.

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “This was a really informative evening, discussing Brexit and what it means for EU nationals living in Watford.

“I’m proud to be the mayor of such a diverse community and am so grateful for the contributions made by people of all nationalities. Whatever your views on Brexit, I hope everyone would agree that it is important that we have more clarity and EU nationals receive necessary, accurate information.”
