We were invited to The White Hart in Chalfont St Giles and take in its new surroundings following its revamp.

The White Hart, in Three Households, reopened on February 21.

The complete refurbishment has created a quintessentially British, cosy, country pub, which has become a home from home setting, thanks to friendly staff, beautifully decorated interiors, seriously good pub food and expertly chosen drinks ranges.

An extended bar area and more intimate dining area has been introduced, along with an open fireplace, timber flooring, plus an interior palette of soft greys and blues.

The refurbishment also includes an enhanced exterior space, with new planting, lighting and furniture to create a fantastic outdoor dining area.

Ijaz Sharma, general manager at the White Hart Chef & Brewer, said: “The White Hart Chef & Brewer is a relaxed destination whatever the occasion, so we wanted to provide our guests with even better surroundings to enjoy the fantastic food and great selection of fine wines and cask ales."

The menu certainly looked appealing. Having been to Chef & Brewer pubs before, I find they have been inconsistent in terms of food and service but The White Hart was certainly one of the best I have been to.

I started off with the seared scallops with chorizo, samphire and garlic mayonnaise (£6.99) and my wife went with the roasted red pepper and sweet potato kofta skewers (£5.39).

My scallops were cooked to perfection and the chorizo and samphire gave the plate a delicious and earthy feel. The garlic mayonnaise was a perfect accompaniment to the meal.

My wife's koftas were like nothing either of us have tried before. They had a really Mediterranean feel and tasted like you were on the beach on some sort of idyllic Greek isle.

The main course menu had a wide variety but I went with the IPA chicken in a basket (£12.99) and my wife went the chef's signature hunters chicken (£12.99).

My dish is an old English pub classic and the chef at The White Hart has really done this meal justice. The chicken was crispy and tender and you could taste the beer on the light batter on the chicken.

It was so moreish that I would have been happy to eat it all over again!

The hunters chicken was a really generous portion and the addition of gammon over bacon was a real winner and my wife had to get me to help finish the plate. What a shame!

While both of us were full from our first two courses, my wife and I managed to share a rich chocolate and raspberry torte (£5.49) which was rich and incredibly decadent.

There is no pretence here, just good old British pub grub at a very affordable price.
