People are being urged to register to vote in time for May's local council elections

Voters in St Albans have only days left to register before the closing date of April 12. Those who register will be able to vote in elections for St Albans City and District Council.

The Electoral Commission launched a campaign, called ‘got 5?’, to increase the numbers of registered voters before the election date of May 2.

The council’s electoral registration officer, Mike Lovelady, said: “There are only days left now to make sure you can take part in the local elections.

“It is particularly important that you act now if you have recently turned 18 or moved home.”

Around one third of the council’s 58 seats come up for election each year in three years out of the four-year cycle.

Voters will elect a councillor in each of the 20 words this year as well as a seat in the Sopwell ward after a resignation.

There will also be elections for town and parish councils across the district.

Mr Lovelady added: “As our campaign says it will only take five minutes and it can all be done online.

“These elections allow residents to have a say on who represents them on issues that directly affect day-to-day life in St Albans.”

Paper copies of the form can also be requested by emailing elections@stalbans.gov.uk or on 01727 819294.

Residents can also register by post or proxy the deadline for post is 5pm April 15. Forms are available at www.yourvotematters.co.uk
