Firefighters are dealing with a fire "large-scale" fire at Oaklands College in St Albans. 

The college in Hatfield first tweeted about the incident at 1.45pm saying the fire brigade was on site at the campus' Discovery Centre.

It confirmed students and staff are safe and well. 
Hertfordshire Fire Service tweeted shortly afterwards: "We are currently dealing with a large scale incident in St Albans. More to follow shortly."

Hertfordshire Highways tweeted the "large fire" was happening inside the college and emergency services were on the scene with delays on the road.

3pm - Fire happened in new building, school says

A spokesman for the college said: "All students are safe, they have all been evacuated.

"The fire is in the Discovery Centre, which is our brand new building with a gym in it, which is such a shame."

It said the fire brigade are still dealing with the incident and as of yet, no one can  really say how much damage has been caused.

According to the college's website, the Discovery Centre was built in 2012. It includes a sports hall, a gym with specialist equipment, and treatment rooms

3.34pm - Police called at 12.21pm

A statement by Hertfordshire Police read: "Police were called at 12.21pm today to assist the fire service at the scene of a fire at Oaklands College in Hatfield Road, Smallford.

"Everyone is safely out of the building. Officers are at the scene to stop vehicles from entering the grounds."
