Flames filled the sky when an aeroplane crashed on Tuesday evening - but there was no need to panic as it was a planned simulated crash.

Emergency services were at Elstree Aerodrome to test their skills responding to the unexpected, such as if a plane were to crash.

The exercise involved a derelict plane, crushed vehicles, and 'casualties'.

Four fire engines and five police cars were at the scene and the casualties were played by the Hertsmere volunteer police cadets.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Tom Prior who organised the training said: "The incident really highlighted the importance of communication between emergency services at large scale incidents to ensure no information is lost. There was some great learning for all of us involved which will be fed back into our organisations.

"I’d like to thank Hertsmere safer neighbourhood team, Herts Fire and Rescue, the force communications room, civil contingencies, events planning and a special thank you to the Hertsmere cadets who were very convincing victims giving the exercise a sense of realism."

A few hours before, Hertfordshire Constabulary warned people they did not need to call 999 if they saw smoke over the aerodrome.
