Members of the community have pulled together to support a fish and chip shop that was damaged by fire over the weekend.

The fire broke out on the first floor and the roof at The Camp Fish and Chip Shop in Sutton Road, St Albans on Saturday (July 13) just before 8.30pm.

When fire crews arrived at the scene, they found a huge blaze on the first floor.

Video footage posted on social media shows flames in the shop itself, and smoke pouring from the roof.

The fire also spread to a neighbouring building.

Crews from St Albans, Hatfield, Redbourn and Stevenage tackled the fire for more than an hour and the blaze was put out by 10.15pm.

The scene of the fire

Well-wisher Sarah Teague set up a crowdfunding page for the owners of the fish and chip shop.

The page has raised £835 of its £5,000 fundraising target.

She said: “We set the appeal up to help a local family through what will be a tough few months, and to give other local people the opportunity also to donate, if they so wish.

“Our own family have been friends with their family for many years.

“They are a very hard-working, kind and generous family and we were incredibly upset when we heard about the devastating fire on Saturday night.”

The fire service said it has logged the incident as accidental and there are no further details about the suspected cause.

The neighbourhood chippy will be familiar to many. Last year, it had been the scene for Gucci’s Autumn campaign.

The short promotion video featured pop star Harry Styles walking outside the shop wearing a dressing gown and carrying a live chicken.
