Police say a suspicious device which was reportedly found inside a block of flats in St Albans has been safely detonated.

Cordons were in place overnight in Approach Road and London Road to allow a controlled explosion to take place.

A number of residents in Approach Road were evacuated at around 10pm last night, including a family of four.

At 12.25am, officers instructed people at the Approach Road cordon to move well away from the scene and take cover behind cars or a building before a 'bang' was heard.

An officer from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal had been seen going in out of the address.

According to residents, police had been in the street since the late afternoon, and when the force reportedly came across a suspicious device, a decision was made to evacuate neighbours in the street.

A 100m cordon was set up and there was no access for drivers along London Road between Alma Road and Grosvenor Road.

Police remain at the scene in Approach Road this morning.

A Hertfordshire Constabulary spokesperson gave the following update earlier today: "The device has been safely detonated via controlled explosion and the scene has been made safe.

"The original cordon has now been reduced and the road closures have been lifted.
