A MAN accused of killing Joss McCaughtrie, who died following a collision in Farnworth last month, has had the charge against him increased to murder.

Shaun Ward, aged 22, of no fixed address, was originally charged with manslaughter following the death of 26-year-old Mr McCaughtrie on March 2.

He was due to enter a plea to the new charge at Manchester Crown Court yesterday, where a hearing took place via Skype video conferencing.

But no judge with the required authority to preside over murder cases was available and so the hearing was adjourned for a plea to be entered on April 16.

Ward was remanded in custody in the meantime.

The case involves an incident where there was a collision between a VW Golf and a pedestrian on Tennyson Road at 8.15am on March 2.

Police say the same pedestrian and car are believed to have previously been involved in a disturbance a short distance away, near to the church on St James’ Street.
