A mother who “touched the lives” of people she knew has died after testing positive for coronavirus.

Pat Campbell, 92, died in Watford General Hospital on Tuesday, March 31, after testing positive for Covid-19.

She was admitted to hospital the previous day, where she was later confirmed to have contracted the virus.

Mrs Campbell, who was born in Somerset, moved with her family to London in the mid-1930s and lived around Finsbury Park and Muswell Hill.

After marrying her husband Don Campbell on Christmas Day in 1947, the couple moved to South Oxhey before settling down in north Watford.

Rob Campbell, one of the couple’s six sons, said his mum was well known for her “vibrant” role in the community.

While her husband served in Hertfordshire Constabulary before becoming a barrister, Mrs Campbell helped children learn to read at school and worked as a volunteer at hospitals.

Mrs Campbell was also a leading member of the Watford Warblers show group which, with the aid of pearly King and Queen costumes and old-time songs, has entertained audiences at community centres and care homes.

Her son said she was a “very gregarious person who touched the lives of a lot of people beyond her family”.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr Campbell, 58, said: “Her death was swift and peaceful.

“She has been a tremendous inspiration as a mother, grand and great-grandmother, friend and community volunteer for generations and we are comforted by knowing that she will be greatly missed by the many whose lives she enriched.

“We are glad that her experience of this virus was such a brief one.”

With the coronavirus pandemic having claimed thousands of lives in the UK and across the world, Mr Campbell said he “doesn’t know” if it makes his mother’s passing "easier or harder".

He said: “Normally, when these things happen, you are on your own with them and the rest of the world is going about its business as usual.

“But this is different by the fact that our own loss is part of a much larger thing.”

As well as her six sons, Mrs Campbell leaves behind a total of 23 grandchildren and great grandchildren in London, Bristol, Scotland, Holland and Australia.

Mr Campbell said his mum’s funeral will be “very modest” and limited to very close family because of the coronavirus pandemic, but that a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

He said: “We would like to thank her carers, friends, neighbours and the staff at Watford General and St Albans Hospitals for their kindness in recent years and days.

“She will be widely remembered across Watford.”
