A couple were fined just £60 each after travelling 150 miles to have a day at the beach as some Brits ignored lockdown rules over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The pair flouted the measures to make the 150 round trip from their home in St Albans, Hertfordshire, to Camber Sands in East Sussex.

The coronavirus lockdown is intended to curb the spread of the virus and to help the NHS cope with the number of cases, but some people are still ignoring the rules.

They couple were fined as part of the police attempt to enforce the COVID-19 lockdown measures over public holiday.

Sussex police said the pair were fined £60 each reduced to £30 each if they paid within 30 days.

Officers had issued more than 100 fines to people ignoring the government's social distancing measures to 'stay home and save lives'.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said the weekend led to an increase in reports of anti-social behaviour connected to Covid-19 and a few instances of officers, security guards, shop staff and other key workers being threatened.

Two more people were also fined at Camber Sands during the four-day Easter weekend.

Police said a man from Bexley, south east London, was also fined after admitting to riding around the south east on his motorbike.

The current lockdown rules only allow people outside for essential reasons - to buy food and medicine, for exercise, for medical appointments, and for essential work.

However some visitors were not there just to enjoy the weather.
