Only two deaths of people living in Watford were linked to coronavirus, the latest weekly data from the Officer for National Statistics has shown.

ONS figures reveal two residents in the town died where Covid-19 appeared on the death certificate between May 16 and May 22, with deaths registered up until May 30.

One took place in a care home and one took place in hospital.

The week earlier, three deaths of people living in Watford were linked to coronavirus.

The latest weekly death figures are nowhere near the figures we were seeing in April, where 45 coronavirus deaths of Watford residents were reported over a two week period.

In total, 107 coronavirus deaths have been reported by the ONS in Watford – this includes three deaths which have recently been registered but did not occur last week.

The overall number of deaths in Watford from all causes is down to almost its lowest levels in 2020.

ONS has reported 10 deaths between May 16 and May 22, down from 14 the previous week.

Only one week in late February has reported fewer deaths (9).

Over a two-week period during the peak of the pandemic in Watford, 102 residents died from all causes, including Covid-19.

The picture is the same in Three Rivers which overall has been less affected by Covid-19 that it’s neighbours Watford and Hertsmere.

Coronavirus appeared on the death certificate of one Three Rivers resident between May 16 and May 22. They died in hospital.

This is down from four the previous week.

ONS reports 82 Covid-19 deaths in Three Rivers, with the majority of them taking place in mid to late April.

Nine deaths took place in Three Rivers of all causes between May 16 and May 22, the latest data shows, which is down two from the previous week.

This total of nine is the lowest in the whole of 2020.

The worst hit borough in Hertfordshire for coronavirus deaths, Hertsmere, has seen the tiniest increase in Covid-19 deaths, weekly data shows.

Five deaths took place between May 16 and May 22, up from four the previous week.

Four of those people died in hospital while the fifth died in a care home.

The figure of five is well off the numbers Hertsmere saw in mid-April where regularly, 25 or more deaths linked to Covid-19 each week.

There have been a total of 174 Covid-19 deaths in Hertsmere, more than anywhere else in the county.

Data from the ONS last week had Hertsmere as the highest coronavirus death rate of anywhere in the UK, per 100,000 population, even when coronavirus deaths in the borough were down in single digits.

Eighteen deaths occurred in Hertsmere from all causes between May 16 and May 22, ONS data shows which is up from 16 the week earlier.

With one of the largest care home populations in the borough, Hertsmere tends to record more deaths than Watford and Three Rivers.

North Hertfordshire, East Hertfordshire, and Dacorum all recorded more deaths between May 16 and May 22 than Hertsmere, which is to be expected, mainly due to population size.

The number of weekly deaths involving coronavirus in England and Wales fell by almost a third in a week and reached its lowest level for seven weeks, official figures show.

There were 2,589 deaths involving coronavirus in England and Wales registered in the week ending May 22, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

The ONS said there were 12,288 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending May 22 - a drop of 2,285 from the previous week but still 2,348 more than the five-year average.
