New brown outdoor bins are being delivered to Watford residents as a new for people to recycle their food waste.

Watford Borough Council is making changes to the town’s waste and recycling services, which will see the introduction of weekly food waste collection.

This will take over from the current fortnightly collection with the green garden waste bin, with the move coming into effect from August 31.

Over the next few weeks, the council will be delivering new 23-litre outdoor brown bins to households, which will be the new way for residents to recycle food waste on a weekly basis.

Inside the bin, people will find a leaflet explaining how to use it and a complimentary roll of 52 compostable liners for their indoor kitchen caddy.

Residents can start placing food waste in this bin from August 31.

Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “We are committed to making sure residents have the best possible local services and we play our part in tackling climate change. We know our residents are keen to reduce the amount of waste they throw away, recycle more and make better use of our natural resources.

“They’ve told us a weekly food waste collection is one way we can help them do this so we are really pleased to be introducing the new service as part of our overall new waste and recycling service for Watford.”

Darren Harding, Veolia Watford Senior Contract Manager, added: “We started to deliver around 30,000 outdoor brown food waste bins to residents across the town from July 27 as part of the upcoming service changes.

“All the information people need on the new service is in the leaflet they will have received through the door recently. This includes what waste goes in what bin, information on the new chargeable garden waste services and the days residents can expect their collections – which may have changed so it is really important people read it carefully.”

Changes to the waste and recycling service include:

• The introduction of a weekly collection of food waste, with households receiving a new 23 litre outdoor brown bin.

• Fortnightly collection of the black bin for non-recyclable waste

• The introduction of a yearly subscription service for fortnightly collections of garden waste (using existing green bins). This will cost £45, or £40 if paid by direct debit. Those who are entitled to a concession will only pay £35.

The current weekly collection of the blue lidded recycling bin will remain the same. Residents can sign up to the chargeable garden waste collection service at https://www.watford.gov.uk/gardenwaste.

The council has encouraged people to sign up by mid-August to ensure they do not see a break in their collections when the new service starts from September.
