London is facing the prospect of "additional measures" to combat surging coronavirus cases due to its "unique needs and challenges".

London Mayor Sadiq Khan and the Prime Minister Boris Johnson discussed the coronavirus situation in the capital during a phone call yesterday.

And a spokesman for Mr Khan said: "Sadiq had a constructive telephone call with the PM this morning.

"They discussed the rapidly worsening situation in London, including increasing ICU admission rates, and the need to go further now to prevent a disastrous full lockdown in future including mandatory face coverings for hospitality workers and more widespread wearing of face coverings.

"It is clear that London has unique needs and challenges and additional measures need to be examined which are suitable for the capital.

"Sadiq and the PM agreed to speak more regularly."

Mr Johnson chaired a Cobra committee meeting with the leaders of the devolved administrations before speaking to Mr Khan.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "The Prime Minister set out the importance of all parts of the United Kingdom working closely together in response to the second wave of coronavirus.

"And following the Cobra meeting the Prime Minister spoke with the Mayor of London to discuss the situation there."

It comes as the Prime Minister ordered new coronavirus restrictions for England in the House of Commons which will be introduced over the coming days.

The measures include office workers being told to work from home again.

Pubs, bars and restaurants will be table-service only and are subject to a 10pm curfew.

Face coverings will be required for taxi passengers, retail staff and hospitality customers, except when sitting down eating or drinking.

Retail, leisure and tourism businesses face fines or closure for failing to comply with coronavirus rules.

Last night, the government has warned of "tougher measures" if people do not follow the latest coronavirus restrictions.

In a television broadcast on Tuesday night, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said "we must reserve the right to go further" if cases continue to rise.

Tighter restrictions were announced in all four UK nations.

Mr Johnson warned they could last up to six months.

In England, people are being told to work from home if they can and rules on face coverings have been expanded.

Pubs, restaurants and other hospitality venues will have to close by 22:00 BST, and the number of people allowed at weddings has been halved.

Meanwhile, the fines for breaking the rules will also increase to £200 on the first offence.
