Thousands of people were left with little to no water across Barnet for hours this morning.

Residents across the borough have reported problems with their water supply - which appears to have been caused by a burst water main in North Finchley.

Water supplier Affinity Water says it is aware of the burst which has left High Road underwater.

Affinity Water’s repair team are on site and a road closure has been put in place by Tally Ho Corner, to allow a repair to be completed.

People first began reporting issues early this morning with Affinity Water confirming at 7.30am that there was burst in North Finchley.

The water supplier tweeted at 12.30pm a technician has been able to restore water to most of the properties affected although pressure may still be low.

The water supplier tweeted at 7.30am: “#N2 #N3 #N12 #N20 #EN5 We have a burst water on High Road, which may be affecting you.

“Our team are on site, and aim to get this repaired as soon as possible. Further info, and to sign up for text alerts click here: https://bit.ly/2HEL9dJ. We're sorry for any disruption caused.”

An Affinity Water spokesperson told the Times: "We are very sorry for the disruption caused by a large burst on High Road, London, which has caused some localised flooding.

"Our repair teams are on site and are awaiting the arrival of traffic management so a road closure can be put in place to ensure the safety of commuters and technicians whilst repairs are carried out.

"During this time, customers in the area may have low pressure or no water, however our teams are arranging for bottled water to be delivered to vulnerable customers on our priority services register.

"We understand that having your home or business flooded is a very upsetting experience. If customers are flooded as a result of one of our water mains bursting, we will do all that we can to help with the immediate clear up.

"Customers should also contact their insurers as soon as possible, so they can confirm what needs fixing and replacing. Our insurers can then make sure we pay for putting things right.

"We realise how distressing large bursts like this can be and would like to assure customers and commuters that we are working as quickly as possible to resolve the situation.

Residents were asked not to use any electrical appliances that require a water supply, for example washing machines or dishwashers and to conserve water from storage tanks during the time water supply is interrupted.

Julia Hines, who lives in Finchley, was without water and was concerned about how the incident affected vulnerable residents in Barnet.

She said: "I am pleased Affinity came out so fast to work on this. Although it's an inconvenience to me, I am concerned about local businesses, residential care homes, and people can't go out to buy bottled water becuase they are elderly or shielding. I hope they are looked after by their neighbours.

"We’ve had burst water mains before but not during a pandemic. And nothing on this scale though. This is huge.

"Not being able to wash hands is a concern."

Affinity Water and Barnet Council have both been approached for further information.
