TWO people have been arrested for drink driving after a crash shut a residential road last night.

Beggarwood Lane was blocked for a number of hours last night (Friday) after the two-car crash saw police, ambulance and fire crews rush to the scene.

It wasn't reopened until the early hours of Saturday morning as officers cleared up debris and removed the stranded vehicles.

Now, police have confirmed that the drivers of both the white Mini and black Audi, who are both from Basingstoke, that were involved in the crash have been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

The 29-year-old man who was behind the wheel of the Audi fled the scene, and was detained when officers located him in the area.

Three people suffered minor injuries in the crash, with one person having to be taken to hospital to have their injuries assessed.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary told The Gazette: "We can confirm that officers were called out at 10.09pm last night (13 Nov) to reports of a two-vehicle road-traffic collision on Beggarwood Lane, Basingstoke.

"An Audi collided with a Mini on Beggarwood Lane, with the driver of the Audi fleeing the scene. Officers later located the driver in the area and detained them.

"Three people suffered minor injuries, while one person was taken to Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital to have their injuries assessed."

The 29-year-old Audi driver was arrested on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle while over the legal limit, failing to stop at the scene of a road accident, failure to report a road accident, dangerous driving and leaving a vehicle in a dangerous position.

A 26-year-old female from Basingstoke was arrested on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle while over the legal limit.

Three fire engines and a number of police cars and ambulances were called to the scene just before 10.15pm on Friday after the crash was first reported.

The road was closed by police after firefighters and paramedics administered first aid.
