A school will be shut for the rest of this week due to coronavirus.

The Marlborough Science Academy in St Albans published a letter on its website today explaining that “there is no other way to keep us all safe but to shut the school”.

There are cases in several year groups, while more than 30 teachers are self-isolating.

Headteacher Annie Thomson, who wrote the letter, said Year 7 and 8 pupils had originally been asked to stay at home this week.

“Sadly, I have had another case in Year 9, 11 and 12 since writing to Years 7 and 8 which brings my staff absenteeism to 33,” the letter read.

“Year 9, 10 and 11 are operating at less than half a year group.

“I have taken advice from HHC (Herts County Council) and I have of course spoken to my chair of governers and I’m afraid there is no other way in keeping us all safe but to shut the school for all remaining students this week.

“Those of you who know me will know that I am deeply disappointed with this course of action and the position we are all in as schools.”

Staff who are not self-isolating will be in school to conduct remote lessons.
