Public Health England has issued a warning as Covid infection rates in London and Essex are now "some of the highest" in England.

Brentwood's weekly infection rate is the highest in the country. For the seven days to December 25, it is 1,258.1 per 100,000 people.

This is followed by Epping Forest with an infection rate of 1,256 per 100,000 people. There were 1,654 new cases in the seven days ending December 25.

Redbridge has the seventh highest rate - 1,008.4. 3,078 new cases in were recorded in the same time period.

Waltham Forest sits in 21st place, with an infection rate of 841.6

Professor Kevin Fenton, London Regional Director for Public Health England said: “London has some of the highest levels of Covid-19 infection in the country and our hospital admissions are rising.

"We know that the majority of new cases in Londoners are due to the new strain of SARS-CoV-2, which is more infectious and spreads rapidly.

“With such high levels of the virus circulating in our communities, it is so important that Londoners do not underestimate the basics of stopping the spread at this critical time: wash your hands, wear a mask and keep your distance from others.

“We must also continue to follow the tier 4 restrictions in place and stay at home as much as possible to protect vulnerable members of our communities and help the NHS keep its vital services open for all who need them.

"This is essential whilst the vaccine is delivered to those in greatest need, and we can all help by stepping forward and taking up the vaccine for ourselves when the time comes.”

Latest government data shows that yesterday (December 28), there were 4,957 Covid-19 patients in London hospitals. 556 of these patients required the support of a mechanical ventilator.

Around three in five of London’s new cases are due to the new strain of SARS-CoV-2, according to data from the Office for National Statistics.

Preliminary evidence published by Public Health England suggests the new variant does not cause more severe disease or increased mortality, and investigations continue to understand this better.

Here is full list of weekly Covid infection rates for each local authority in England, ranked from highest to lowest.

From left to right, the numbers are: rate of new cases in the seven days to December 25; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to December 25; rate of new cases in the seven days to December 18; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to December 18.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency, based on Public Health England data published on December 29 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.
