A village has been struck by a graffiti vandal appearing to downplay the severity of the coronavirus pandemic.

At least three examples of graffiti have been spotted on walls and fences across Bricket Wood, which appeared in January.

Two words have been repeatedly daubed on fences: F*** CONVID – a play on words of 'Covid' and could be interpreted as the vandal labelling the virus or the pandemic as a 'con'.

The graffiti has been spotted on a wall in Old Watford Road, openly visible to drivers on the A405 dual carriageway, as well as on two sides of a mini-roundabout in Mount Pleasant Lane – although some of the graffiti there has now been cleared off.

More than 100,000 people have died with Covid-19 in the UK according to figures published by Public Health England.

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics show between March and December, 15 Bricket Wood  and Chiswell Green residents died within 28 days of a positive Covid test, which is the second highest out of any district in St Albans, only behind Verulam Park.

And in January, 100 people across St Albans district died within 28 days of a positive Covid test.

Bricket Wood councillor Sue Featherstone says the graffiti is not "representative of the people of Bricket Wood".

She added: “Most residents of Bricket Wood are abiding by the lockdown rules because of this dreadful pandemic.

"For someone to show so little respect for other residents; who have passed away because of it, is beyond credibility. We have had the second highest number of deaths in St Albans area.

"Many families are walking the route where the offensive graffiti has been written; children will be exposed to such disgusting language, not what we want in our respectable neighbourhood.

"I feel for all the residents that have been affected."
