THE mother of a soldier has said she is told of her pride after her son was chosen to carry Prince Philip's coffin at his funeral.

Grenadier Guard Daniel Coghlan, from Telscombe Cliffs, stood at the Duke of Edinburgh’s left shoulder as his coffin was carried from Windsor Castle on Saturday.

Dawn Monk, Daniel’s mother took to social media to share a photo of her son carrying the coffin.

In a post on Facebook, she wrote: “A very proud moment for this family, my son at Philip's left shoulder. GDSM D Coghlan carrying the Prince's coffin. RIP Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh.”

The procession to St George's Chapel for the funeral service was led by the band of the Grenadier Guards.

The guardsman previously crossed paths with the Duke in 2015 when Philip visited Wellington Barracks, where he was stationed, according to the Daily Mail.

Daniel also took part in the Trooping the Colour and a passing out parade in 2014.

Guardman Daniel was one of several soldiers tasked with transporting the Duke to his final resting place.

The Queen and her family gathered to say farewell to the Duke of Edinburgh on Saturday, as the rest of the world watched on.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Queen was seated alone and only 30 people were able to attend.

St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle was decorated with Philip’s insignia reflecting his many roles in public life and his connections with many nations, and his coffin was brought there in a customised Land Rover he helped design.

To mark the start of the service, a minute’s silence was held across the country.

Prince Philip died at Windsor Castle on Friday 9 April, aged 99.

The Queen, who was married to Philip for 73 years, wore a face mask as she led 30 mourners under limits required by current coronavirus laws.
