Police officers worked to move the same group of travellers on from two different locations this week.

Hertfordshire Constabulary was initially called to an encampment in Wheathampstead and at least half a dozen caravans were pictured parked up on playing fields.

Officers worked with council officers to move the group on but they soon pitched up in Harpenden.

However, St Albans district police officers took to social media to reveal they took "swift action" to move them on again.

The police force wrote: "We have been supporting Herts County Council with an unauthorised traveller encampment at Butterfield Road playing fields in Wheathampstead.

"The travellers have now moved on. We regularly patrol the area as part of our proactive patrols to provide community reassurance.

"After officers assisted Herts County Council with an unauthorised traveller encampment in Wheathampstead, swift action was taken by Harpenden SNT (safer neighbourhood team) when the same group tried to pitch up on Harpenden Common. The officers prevented another unauthorised encampment."

Yesterday, officers were drafted in from across Hertfordshire to deal with a large group of travellers in a park in Borehamwood.

Police were able to secure an order to move the travellers on after numerous complaints were made about their presence by residents. There were at least a dozen caravans parked near a skate park.

A Hertfordshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "Police were called around 4pm on Tuesday (20 April) to report an unauthorised encampment in Aberford Park, Aberford Road, Borehamwood.

"Officers attended the area and supported the landowners, Hertsmere Borough Council.

"Initially police powers were not utilised due to the landowners taking action to evict the encampment.

"However, due to aggravating factors and evidence of alleged criminal conduct, it was necessary for police to today (Thursday 22 April) take additional enforcement action under Section 61 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act.

"This action to move the encampment on was to ensure the local community were not adversely affected and any further criminal conduct was prevented. Enquiries are ongoing in relation to alleged offences."

It is unclear whether the travellers in Wheathampstead and Harpenden were the same as the group in Borehamwood.
