An elderly woman has been airlifted to hospital after suffering serious injuries when she was struck by a car.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in a layby on the B653 Lower Luton Road at the Wheathampstead junction with the Ash Grove footpath.

At around 11.15am, a woman aged in her 80s suffered serious injuries after being hit by a grey Suzuki Grand Vitara, Hertfordshire Constabulary said.

She was taken to hospital by air ambulance where she remains at this time.

The driver remained at the scene and assisted police with their enquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses and information.
