A person has died after being hit by a train at Harpenden Station.

British Transport Police says officers were called to the station following reports of a casualty on the tracks at 3.38pm on Sunday.

Paramedics also attended and a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner," a spokesperson said.

During Sunday afternoon Thameslink tweeted: “It is with great sadness that we report a person has been hit by a train between St Albans and Luton.

"All lines are blocked between these stations whilst the emergency services work to deal with this incident."

It comes as Hertfordshire Constabulary said officers searching for a missing woman are now liaising with British Transport Police over an incident at the station.

The force issued a statement on Sunday evening on Facebook.

It said: “Officers investigating a woman missing from St Albans are now liaising with British Transport Police following a non-suspicious tragic incident at Harpenden Train Station.

“This is a very sad incident and we ask that you please refrain from speculating any further and respect the family's privacy at this hugely difficult time.”

Services between St Albans and Luton have returned to normal.
