Motorists using the M25, M1 and a major Watford road leading between both motorways at night are facing disruption from the start of next month due to an extensive programme of roadworks lasting around two months.

A notice from Highways England in this week’s edition of the Watford Observer details plans for a programme of extensive overnight road closures due to start on or after September 3 and lasting for approximately eight weeks.

The closures are needed to enable contractors to carry out street lighting works, including column and base replacement, cabling, cabinet replacement and all associated works.

The order authorises the phased overnight closure of:

  • Both carriageways of the M25 between Junction 20 (A41) and Junction 21A (A405).
  • Both carriageways of the A405 between M1 Junction 6 and M25 Junction 21A.
  • All the slips and links leading to and from the lengths of the carriageway described above, including the links connecting the M25 to the M1 at Junction 21 (M1 Junction 6a).
  • All of the side roads at junction with either carriageway of the A405 between M1 Junction 6A and M25 Junction 21A (A405).
  • All of the gaps in the central reservation between the carriageways described above.
  • All of the bus stops adjacent to the carriageways described above.

The overnight closures are scheduled to take place from 10pm to 5.30am on Monday to Thursday, 11pm to 6am on Friday, 10pm to 6am on Saturday and 10.30pm to 5.30am on Sunday.

These are the maximum periods when the closures will be in place.

Traffic affected by the closures will be diverted using other junctions on the M25 and M1, the A41, A405, A414, Mount Pleasant Road, Station Road, Park Street Lane, Tippendell Lane, Old Watford Road, Chequers Lane and Woodside Road.

The diversion will vary according to the closure in place.

Meanwhile, Hertfordshire County Council is intending to make orders for the temporary closure of roads in Rickmansworth and Chorleywood for roadworks. These are:

  • Berry Lane, Rickmansworth, from its junction with Dog Kennel Lane south-westwards, westwards and north-westwards to its junction with Common Gate Road, a distance of approximately 492m.
  • Common Gate Road, Chorleywood, from its junction with Berry Lane northwards and north-westwards to its junction with Clements Road, a distance of approximately 279m.
  • Berry Lane, Chorleywood, from its junction with Kings Farm Road north-eastwards to its junction with Common Gate Road, a distance of approximately 557m.

This order is needed for utility service works and is due to take effect on August 23.

Also from August 23, another order is due to come into place for the closure of Whitelands Avenue, Chorleywood, from its junction with Blacketts Wood Drive north-westwards to its junction with Brushwood Drive, a distance of approximately 129m.
