Animals get themselves up to all sorts - and nobody sees that more than the RSPCA’s team of rescuers.
More than 4,000 incidents were reported to the charity in 2021 in Hertfordshire alone with just under 45,000 in the south east.
Some rescues can be more memorable than others and the RSPCA has revealed some of its biggest and strangest rescues of the year in our region.
This includes a fox cub who needed help after getting his back leg stuck in the metal grate of a drain in Berkhamsted.
Rescuer Lauren Bailey was called to help the stricken youngster in August when a passersby spotted the poor cub.
She said: "The fox must have got stuck after his leg fell down the gap and was quite distressed and bedraggled, from the rain, when I arrived. We offered him a little dish of water and then set about carefully trying to wriggle him free.
"Thankfully, I was able to get him out but was concerned about his leg so took him to a wildlife hospital for treatment."
Foxes also found themselves in trouble further afield when cub found himself stuck inside a metal duck-shaped planter in Kent, one got caught hiding under the passenger seat of an Alfa Romeo in East Sussex, while a small fox in West Sussex caught her head in a concrete mosquito trap.
Other rescues included a trapped deer in woodland in Berkshire, a grass snake caught under a fire door in Surrey, a robin trapped under a sunken trampoline in Kent, a badger who got stuck in a compost bin, and a stallion that got caught on a fence.
Overall in 2021 (up to November 30), 281,390 incidents were reported to the RSPCA's frontline teams via its emergency hotline.
