An arrest has been made after several reports of a man approaching families with children and trying to engage them in conversation in St Albans.

They been happening since yesterday and following what Herts Police described as “a further incident” in Victoria Park today (July 7), a man was taken into custody.

Detective constable Adam Haines said: “I fully understand that incidents of this nature cause a great deal of concern among local communities.

“Thanks to the vigilance of members of the public, officers were able to attend and make a swift arrest.”

A Herts Police spokesperson declined to say more about the alleged incident today or confirm what he was arrested on suspicion of at this time. 

They subsequently confirmed the man was arrested on suspicion of attempted kidnap and is currently in police custody.

DC Haines said enquiries are continuing, adding: “We would like to hear from anyone who may have been approached in suspicious circumstances over the past couple of days, or who has witnessed anyone acting suspiciously around the St Albans area.”
