Major fire sends smoke over St Albans - live updates

  • A huge fire broke out in St Albans sending smoke all over the city and surrounding areas
  • Firefighters and other emergency services have been at an industrial estate off London Road, just outside the city centre, after being called at around 11am (July 25)
  • A car workshop caught fire before flames spread to neighbouring commercial properties
  • Photos show a building which has a row of businesses engulfed in flames
  • At least 11 fire engines and 50 firefighters attended the scene
  • People were evacuated from the area. There are no reports of injuries at this time although some are believed to have been treated for smoke inhalation
  • Residents reported hearing explosions and huge plumes of smoke spread across the city
  • Police have also been at the scene and closed off a number of roads including London Road between St Vincent Drive and Orient Close
  • The area is still believed to be cordoned off this evening but the fire was brought under control by 6.45pm
  • The cause of the fire has not been confirmed at this time
