An arrest has been made after a woman's iPhone was stolen in while she was shopping in Marks & Spencer.

The 35-year-old man from Harrow was taken into custody after officers caught up with him in Victoria Street this morning (Tuesday, June 6), near St Albans City train station.

Prior to his arrest, an iPhone 14 was taken from a woman aged in her 40s in Marks & Spencer.

Following this incident, which took place at around 11am, the woman alerted M&S staff.

The employees then passed on a description of the suspect - through 'Shop Watch' - to CCTV operators from St Albans City and District Council.

This led to officers from Hertfordshire Police completing the arrest in Victoria Street, on suspicion of theft from a person.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Constabulary said: "A man was quickly arrested by safer neighbourhood officers for (the) theft of an iPhone 14 this morning in Victoria Street, St Albans, and the victim was reunited with her phone an hour later."

The following advice has also been issued by officers:

• Be aware of your surroundings.

• Keep your phone out of sight and zipped up in your bag/jacket pocket.

• Keep an eye out for elderly and vulnerable people.
