The idea that St Albans has the most pubs per square mile is often repeated, even if sometimes disputed.

With that in mind, a group of us set out to drink a pint in every haunt in town. I am one of the pair who have managed to tick off every single location (within our definition of a pub and of the city limits) to be able to vote on and review the top ten.

If you don’t quite have the time or inclination for the same, or you are just visiting the city, this list narrows it down to the best that we think you should not miss.

10, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks – Abbey Mill Lane - George (#7)

“Ye Olde Fighting Cocks' claim to be England’s oldest pub is often contested, but its wide range of ales, undeniable historic atmosphere, and location right next to Verulamium Park see it held as a community favourite.” - George

Tied-8, The Plough (Tyttenhanger) – Tyttenhanger Green - Fintan (#5)

“If you are coming from town on a sunny day, the walk via the Alban Way might make the trip worth it before you even arrive.

"Once you do, the interior is a perfect country pub. It also enjoys a beautiful view out either way leaving you feeling a lot further from the hustle and bustle than you really are.” – Fintan

Tied-8, The Verulam – Lower Dagnall Street - George (#5)

“The Verulam is an old coaching inn hidden in our city’s backstreets and offers a massive selection of craft beer with a delightful modern interior away from the high street.” - George

“OK. It is not for everyone, but The Rats is a great local and offers something a bit different from the average St Albans bar or a chain pub.

"Anyone looking for the classic pub experience will find it here and it particularly shines for watching a London derby on the projector.” – Fintan

6, The Horn – Victoria Street – Fintan (#6) George (#8)

“It is not beating the competition as a day-to-day sit-down pub. Yet, when there is quality music or the pub quiz on, The Horn might be where the most fun is being had.” – Fintan

“The contribution to the local and national music scene makes it a special place to enjoy a beverage, especially alongside live tunes from up-and-coming artists before they make it big.” – George

T-4, Mad Squirrel Tap – Market Place – Fintan (#10) George (#3)

“The contemporary style might not appeal to all, but the broad selection of craft alcohol, and the beer garden with views of the cathedral, really hit the spot on sunny afternoons.” - George

“On beer selection alone this and the entry it is tied with would be the clear winners, which can’t be underrated in a pub.” – Fintan

T-4, Beer Shop - London Rd – Fintan (#7) George (#6)

“Not one to miss, it is a very distinct hidden gem with friendly staff who know what they are talking about when it comes to the wide and sophisticated range of beer.” – Fintan

“It doesn’t have much seating. However it does have, on tap and in bottles, dozens of unique beers from across northern Europe and bar space ensuring a unique but familiar drinking experience.” – George

3, The Boot – Market Place – Fintan (#3) George (#4)

“The Boot reminds you of its historic roots with its low ceilings and array of exposed timber. Rotating ales and a busy atmosphere from its central location makes it a great spot.” – George

“You can see the history in The Boot, but it’s definitely not tired. It is a fun stop on a Friday or Saturday night.” – Fintan

T-1, Lower Red Lion – Fishpool Street - Fintan (#2) George (#1)

“Tucked away from the bustle of the city centre down Fishpool Street, Lower Red Lion is nestled inside a Grade II-listed building, and provides a cosy spot to sample a wide variety of drinks” – George

“Absolutely lovely. It is a real toss-up between this and The Mermaid for number one.

"The Lower Red Lion has a good beer selection and feels very relaxed. It is the ideal spot for a quieter catch-up with friends.” – Fintan

“The Mermaid’s well preserved historic interior is a delight to sit amongst, and there’s a good sized beer garden for summer weather.” - George
