MORE than £1,000 worth of donations have flooded into St Michael's Church since the Review launched its 'Raise the Roof' fundraising appeal.

Rt Reverend Brett Gray, vicar at the historic St Michael's Street church, said he has been overwhelmed with envelopes of cash and cheques through his door.

The Review stepped in to help the community after thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused by mindless vandals when lead was stolen from its roof just over a week ago. As a result rainwater poured through leaving it in a ruined state.

Although Reverend Gray said there is not a single figure he can pinpoint which will need to be raised, tbut he temporary roof being fitted at the moment has cost £7,000 alone and quotations for the full repair have come in at £50,000 if not more.

The vicar thanked the Review for its help and also local people who have been really generous with their donations.

A quiz held at the Portland Arms in Portland Street, St Albans raised £300 from which the church has benefited.

Reverend Gray said: “The reality of this is that it will be a struggle. A lot of people think the Government pays towards the up keep of the church but that's not the case. The reality of having a historic church is a huge amount of money goes in each year to keep it going.

“So it's up to us to find the money and that's the difficulty. But people have been great to us. Just over the last two days I have received about £700 through my door. Everyone is being so generous.”

He added: “Many of them have read about us in your paper and it seems to have had a big effect so we are really grateful for the Review's help.”
