CLAIMS that the Midland Main Line can take large goods trains are not backed by detailed research, Helioslough's transport witness has admitted.
Cross-examining Nick Gallup, the council's barrister Matthew Reed said that a detailed study by consultant Laser Rail Ltd had found 28 problems such as low bridges before giving the route the G7 gauge description.
In contrast, he argued, Network Rail's classification of the line – essential for using any goods depot near St Albans – as the larger G8 gauge was supported by less detailed work.
Mr Gallup responded: “Network Rail are custodian of the network. Their data is more up to date.”
But pressed by Mr Reed he admitted: “There has been no detailed rail analysis, except the one done by Laser Rail.”
