SCHOOL pupils from across Harpenden are spreading Christmas cheer to Eastern Europe by filling boxes of gifts for impoverished children and elderly people.
Pupils from nine primary and infant schools, including St Dominic RC Primary School, in Southdown Road, Harpenden, filled more than 700 boxes with small toys and gifts for children and elderly people in countries such as Albania and Romania.
Their efforts were part of a country-wide scheme organised by the Rotary Club and the shoeboxes themselves were donated by the Harpenden branch.
The boxes will be delivered in time for Christmas by a Rotarian volunteer who will drive the gifts to their destination over eight days.
It is the fifth consecutive year all nine schools have contributed to the cause. Club president Lynn Blackwell said: "There are now a good many sick and disadvantaged children and elderly people the other side of Europe with reason to be grateful to the pupils and their parents for their generosity."
