TRIBUTES have been paid to a “hard working” and “dedicated” Welwyn Hatfield councillor who has died at the age of 80.
Councillor John Mansfield represented Northaw and Cuffley throughout his time on the cabinet, having being first elected in May 1991.
Paying tribute, Michel Saminaden, chief executive of the borough council, said: “John was a very dear colleague, he was passionate about his work and a very valuable member of the council. We will miss him greatly.”
The Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield Councillor Kim Langley added: “It is very sad to lose someone like John, he was hard working and dedicated, and his fabulous sense of humour and enthusiasm will be a loss to us all.”
Councillor Mansfield served as chairman of the council from 1999 to 2000 and was appointed deputy leader and member of the cabinet in May 2205.
Most recently Councillor Mansfield held the role of executive member for transport and hackney carriages after stepping down as deputy leader in October 2009.
Councillor John Dean, leader of the council, said: “John and I were elected as councillors at the same election in 1991.
“He served the community with 100 per cent commitment and was a steadfast colleague and friend. We will miss his knowledge and his sharp sense of humour.
“John will be missed by all.”
