A SUPPORT worker at the YMCA hostel in Welwyn Garden City has spoken to the Review about her role, describing it as her mission in life.

Heidi Rochford is one of ten support workers providing help and advice for residents at the Peartree Lane hostel, which the Review is backing with its Space appeal.

She said: "It not a career but more a vocation in life – my mission.

“I can honestly say that I love my job. Many people just need someone to listen to them and assist them in achieving their goals in life.

"The YMCA is a place where people can come and move forward at their own pace but still be aware that they have a support network around them.

"To see them reach their full potential, gain in confidence and grow into young adults who can take on the world gives me a great sense of achievement.

"Many come from hard and sad backgrounds and to see the motivation some have is a great encouragement to me. I am lucky to be able to work very closely with our clientele."

One YMCA resident said: "Heidi has helped me over the last few months and weeks with some issues I have had in my life.

"She is easy to talk to and always to give me some time.

"I feel I can talk to Heidi in confidence and she will always support me even if the support she gives me is not always easy to accept.

"She is good to my boys when they come and visit and makes them feel welcome."

The Review is backing the YMCA's efforts to raise money for its Space drop in centres in Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City.
