COUNCILLORS in Welwyn Hatfield will take to the road on Christmas day to personally deliver meals on wheels to residents.

Once again they will be spreading some festive cheer by delivering the Meals on Wheels.

Councillors Sara Johnston, Steven Markiewicz, Fiona Thomson, Louise Lotz, Les Page, Jon Beckerman and Roger Trigg will be stepping in for the day so that regular Meals on Wheels drivers can have time off.

Turkey and all the trimmings, as well as mushroom and ale pie for vegetarians, will be on the menu when around 30 of the council’s Meals on Wheels clients get VIP treatment for the day.

The Round Table will pay for the meals with a £1,000 donation raised during its annual fundraising sleigh ride round borough and a collection at the Tesco store in Hatfield.

Councillor Tony Kingsbury, executive member for leisure and community, said: “This is a fine, festive example of us all coming together to bring cheer to members of the community.

"Those who cannot be with friends or family will still get their Christmas Day visit and meal, thanks to staff, volunteers and our ‘elected’ drivers.

“We are also very grateful for the continued support of the Round Table and those who put money in their collecting tins and are putting food on the table for some of the more vulnerable residents in the Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council area.”
