COMMUTERS have been faced with chaos this morning with trains being cancelled and confusion over a new payment system for station car parks.

First Capital Connect has cancelled services on the Bedford to Brighton line due to a shortage of driver and posted on Twitter: "We are sorry for the cancellations on the Thameslink route. This has been due to short notice illness. Apologies again."

However this is not the first apology the company has made to its customer in the last 24 hours. Yesterday evening FCC took to the social networking site to say "very sorry for the short notice" on releasing details about the new parking provider Apcoa.

From today Apcoa will be responsible for operating and maintaining all First Capital Connect car parks, replacing NCP and its RingGo Pay by Phone service.

Commuters starting the day at St Albans and Harpenden stations have been faced with the new system and have found they were not able to pay by card and could not text to set up a mobile payment they have to phone.

Maria Moyes, who uses Harpenden station, said people were angry this morning that no ticket machines were accepting cards and it would now cost 20 pence to make a mobile payment.

Some who complained to FCC have been told not to pay for today and others, like Maria, have been forced to use other pay and display car parks.

FCC said a technical fault has meant machines at station car parks were not accepting cards, but people can still pay by cash.

They have been advising commuters not to pay for today while the problems is being fixed.
