The leader of Hertfordshire County Council, Robert Gordon, has been appointed a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Mr Gordon was first elected to the county council in 1989 and has been leader since 2007. He also served two terms on Watford Borough Council and was chairman in 2004/05.

His appointment is in recognition of his "services to local government".

Councillor Gordon said: "Hertfordshire County Council is one of the most highly regarded councils in the land and I am delighted and flattered that my contribution to local government has been recognised in this way.

"I was first elected as a councillor over 30 years ago and have found the role to be immensely fulfilling.

"While politicians often receive more brickbats than thanks, there can be no more singular compliment than receiving this honour from the Queen in her Diamond Jubilee year."

John Wood, the council’s chief executive, said: "Robert Gordon has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to local government in general and Hertfordshire in particular.

"Through his roles here at Hertfordshire County Council, in our region and nationally, the leader of the council has sought to ensure that the work of local government is valued.

"The county council's focus on the links between Hertfordshire communities and their local councillors very much reflects Robert Gordon's stated aim to strengthen local democracy and accountability."
