Forget paper and go electronic ?

So most of us will watch the Olympics on our tele’s...or at least the news summaries. How did we exist before the TV and the computer?

I was “people watching” on the train the other day. Everyone man woman and child was absorbed in an electronic device – 2 laptops, 2 i pads, 4 i-phones, 1 DS, 2 mobiles, 1 kindle..

I was “people watching” in church the other day. Several were following the reading from their phones, and two within view were making notes of the sermon on their i pads. Several others might have been texting their friends and not listening to the sermon, you never know. The registering of the children is their own groups is done electronically.

What will the future hold? I still pick gooseberries in my garden by hand. I still wield a paint brush with real paint. I do wonder, sometimes, although I try to keep up, whether I shall get left behind in this technological revolution.

How far should the church embrace this new phase? Should we have internet churches and fellowship on line? Should we forget that paper existed?

At the library, at the train station, and at the bank, we can cut out the need for relating to humans. Yes, we must “go with the flow” and use every modern avenue of communication to pass on the good news of Jesus Christ, but heaven forbid that we ever ever miss out on coming together as people.
