The weather this weekend will be mixed across the UK, with showers and fog covering some of the country.

The best of the sunshine will be in the South West on Saturday, although across the rest of the UK the weather will be “fairly decent”, said Met Office meteorologist Sophie Yeomans.

Showers are expected in London on Sunday, especially between 1pm and 4pm, when the Boat Race will be held on the Thames.

Temperatures will be no higher than 16C (61F) in the capital on Saturday, with lows of 5C (41F).

Scotland will see a lot of rain across the weekend, the forecaster said, especially over Edinburgh and the east coast.

There are highs of 7C (45F) and lows of 5C (41F) in Scotland across the weekend.

Hilly areas of the UK could see fog on Sunday morning, and cold temperatures throughout the weekend could cause a frost in the west of England and Wales.

It will be a cold but generally dry weekend in northern English cities including Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds, with the possibility of small showers on Sunday.

Temperatures in the North West will be between 7C (45F) and 15C (59F), while the North East will be colder, with highs of 9C (48F).

The worst weather of the coming week is expected on Tuesday, the Met Office said.

A band of rain will move across England, covering much of the south. It will also bring heavy rain in South Wales, although the north of England and north Wales are expected to be sunnier.

Once the rain on Tuesday has passed, the rest of the UK should expect a dry end to next week.
