ST ALBANS RUGBY CLUB gave visitors, Old Millhillians, an 86-point thrashing at Boggymead Springs on Saturday to continue their fine recent run of form.
After last week's excellent showing in the local derby with Old Verulamians, the Saints relished this easier test and had no hesitation in taking their disappointing opponents to task.
St Albans dominated from the off as their pack overwhelmed its rivals in both the set pieces and the loose, giving the talented set of backs plenty of ball from which to initiate various successful moves.
The highlights of the performance were a hat-trick of tries each for winger Barry Wainwright and centre Martin Alderton.
In addition, winger Doug Morette and number-eight Dave Stanford notched a brace of touchdowns each while Donald Onuyma and skipper Jack Stevenson helped themselves to a try apiece.
Unsung heroes for the boys from Boggymead were lock Tim Davy, drafted in at the last minute, and prop Danny Batchelor who between them dominated the line-out and the loose.
Despite the mammoth winning margin, Saints coach, Ian Peel, felt this reflected a good but by no means perfect team performance.
St Albans took as much pride in the zero points conceded over the eighty minutes as they were of the 86 gained.
The Saints are expecting a much tougher test when top-of-the-table Fullerians visit Sandpit Lane on Saturday.
